I am incredulous!

This US Special Forces operation deserves a standing ovation for immaculate execution. Except, some details do get confusing.

Maybe I’m just slow, but truly, viewing the still pictures of the compound where Osama was shot to death that are being aired on local TV here, I am spell-bound by many odd contradictions.

First, the wall that encircled the compound, which was blasted through to allow entry to the US attackers, showed a humble charpoy next to a water geyser & a few odd household items stacked right next to the opening. Not a hair out of place, so to speak. It was all a little too orderly for my lawyerly taste. Wouldn’t something have been damaged or knocked over at least?

Second, the room where the crucial “fire fight” took place causing deaths of Osama, his wife and some others(but no American), showed what were very, very humble lodgings. My own servant’s room is posh in comparison . There are no marks of bullets ricocheting off the walls, and there’s no sign of damaged glass from the good-sized windows on one wall. The bed sheets on the two charpoys are so neat as to do a hotel maid proud. There’s just over 250 ml of blood on the floor between the two charpoys. It looks to me as though, rather more than a fire fight, Osama & Co. were simply sitting ducks for a hunting party! Wait, that’s not all. The glass in the window is see-through. How odd! Anyone could have looked in and seen the world’s most wanted man once night fell, and remember, it’s an open area.

The downed helicopter, miraculously, disgorged its crew like magic. Presto! All unharmed by the crash! Yet oddly, the three neighbors of Osama who rushed to the scene to help, and who would have been witnesses to what actually happened, all have gone missing and never returned home.

And hey, where are the other dead bodies? There were some, no? And why the rush, rush, rush to dump Osama in the ocean? Why not share the evidence to put a stop of rumor mongers? At least show the someone objective.

The picture of a dead Osama circulating on the web was bad photo shop job. Truly. Kids do a better job. Why not show the body or the DNA test results to the media, or ISI?

A friend wrote to me saying, “The USA is about to withdraw from Afghanistan. What better way than after ‘Mission accomplished’?  Obama is entering the re-election period. This  will boost his ratings.

Pakistan’s army and the ISI are caught on the back foot because of their inability to detect OBL   presence in Abbotabad. Pakistan is again on the defensive , after having gained the high ground on the (Raymond) Davis

affair. The world once again views Pakistan as the terrorist capital of the

world. Is this another step in its balkanization and an excuse for eliminating its nukes?”

But I find it just so hard to believe that this was not a mutually cooked dish.

As another friend said, ”We may be poor, we are not stupid.

all the right points raised yas, well done.

the matter of 3 missing eye witnesses is still out of most media.

several other eye witnesses have reported that army personnel had cordoned off the area BEFORE the whole incident. and THEY were the ones who asked the people to go back inside. NOT the american SEALS.

It is also in the news that it was in fact Pak Army that asked the lights to be out in the region BEFORE the said incident.

there was another speculation: the Tarbela Ghazi flying missions were a norm. so it is possible fake osama, or real osama was brought here. NOT detected, as our military thought of it as the usual run of the mill thing. and presto.

the radar jamming theory seems far fetched. as Obama himself praised Pakistan in his address.

    Dear YAA
Very nice. A postulation that would be hard to fault. A lawyers mind and a journalists vision has come up with questions that would end up in a stammering response with no logical answers. Your “Mutually cooked dish” is the most apt and appropriate answer.

  • Khan Zia  On May 3, 2011 at 5:18 pm

Thanks. Nicely put. Shocking to know about missing neighbours who went to the assistance of the crashed helicopter survivors. Media in Pakistan at least must be made to investigate and if necessary take up their cause.
A point that is often overlooked for some reason is that bin Laden suffered from renal failure and was dependent upon regular dialysis to survive. The process requires a sterile environment and special handling. There are not that many dialysis machines in Pakistan. These can be easily traced from the supply of spare parts, special filters and the trail left by other technical support. More than that, patients on dialysis generally have limited life expectancy. It needs to be determined if bin Laden could have survived for so long under the conditions in which he lived and if his dialysis needs could not have provided the lead to locate him years earlier?
    Regards. Zia.

  • Saqib Awan  On May 3, 2011 at 7:37 pm

    Good analysis.
The problem is that the majority don’t buy the truth as they are driven by the mainstream media and predetermined perceptions. As a follower of the developing news on popular social media platforms, I find so much negative publicity on Pakistan just because the location of OBL’s operation, like we were missing it already!
I’m afraid we have reached a stage whereby having a robust defensive strategy will not suffice and less than aggressive counter attack will not be lavish for a remedying the current situation!

  • Brig Larif  On May 3, 2011 at 11:40 pm

There are very serious snags in the story. Moreover before this Pervez Musharraf and Be-Nazir have been talking of Osama’s having died on international media and nobody ever challenged them. Logically speaking Americans should have gone out of their way to show and prove to the world Osama’s death in this operation, just the way they publicised Sadda’s capture. But this time they are being rather too much secretive. There is something fishy …………….

Great article ma’am. Also, some newspapers did report that the DNA tests confirmed that it was Bin Laden’s body. However, how can DNA tests be confirmed just within a few hours or 1 day? It’s just not possible. Details really are missing.

Precisely precise and wonderfully postulated, Whole of the operation was a third class script from a fourth class Bollywood movie. Americans have let down their own Hollywood even. However, i doubt US is planning an exit from Afghanistan.

  • Syed Ataur Rahman  On May 4, 2011 at 5:54 am

Well done Yasmeen. You are spot on in your assessment. As usual a very well written series of article. The American imperialism notwithstanding, this government and this time our armed forces too seem to be in league with the aggressors. They first allow and then watch as silent spectators. Now the government has the audacity to shout ‘foul’. It is shameful to the highest degree. We have lost our sovereignty, our dignity and any semblance of self respect we might have still retained. This government, besides being thoroughly corrupt is spineless, gutless and acts on the whims and dictates of the US hierarchy. It shamelessly continues to demean this nation. The military is no better unfortunately. For once they should tell us what their policy is, even if that means they are have already capitulated and are completely sold out to the Americans and will continue to wag their tails at their legal or illegal orders. One is completely disgusted with the events, and our heads hang in shame.

Let us take comfort in the fact that this is the price Pakistani’s pay for the free aide that
they get from USA. Dont like this? Work more and innovate, so as to offset this need
for alms and refuse aid from outside.

Why cant we realise, all types of aids come
with expectations. Which eventually need to be fulfilled.

Outstanding keen and very neat observation. I wonder what the President Obama and his team were watching. There are too many things that forces a reasonably intelligent person find himself lost at sea.

Some thing seriously amiss. How could President Zardari react so fast and write a very articulate article.

Most amazing episode. It will take along time unravel the convincing truth.

It’s too early to make speculations like you have, only time and emerging details will unfold the truth. But from the news we have so far, you made some good points.

    • pakpotpourri2  On May 4, 2011 at 3:56 pm

      Dear AJ
I have not speculated at all. Speculation, is defined as “A conclusion, opinion, or theory reached by conjecture”.I have offered no conclusion, nor opinion,or theory.I have raised QUESTIONS on the conclusion, opinion, or theory reached by conjecture by SOMEONE ELSE.

    Take care,

  • loservillelabor  On May 4, 2011 at 4:56 pm

The “news” and government have really shown their incompetence on this thing. There were 1,2,3,4 helicopters. There was an 8,10,12 foot wall around this place that was a mansion, huge hut. There were multiple bodies from a shoot out, but no pictures identities given. Osama’s daughter, wife was killed, not killed, shot in the leg. Osama had a gun, didn’t have a gun, but resisted nonetheless. Seal Team 6 did this, and the CIA put a bullet in Osama, but there is no Team 6?

    Believe what you see methinks.

  • Jaleel Ahmed  On May 4, 2011 at 6:38 pm

    Ms Ali,

The Abbotabad drama was for the Americans only and some similar stupid Europeans, I doubt that anyone in Pakistan believes any of the BS given by the US or our Media, but Gen Aslam Baig, was very candid on the Camera, and said that the whole episode was a lie, as OBL died in Dec 2001, and I believe what the General said.
This is the age of Dajjal, one never knows what is the truth as Dajjal is the best impostor ever.

    Hola Yasmeen,

  • Akhar Khan  On May 6, 2011 at 2:35 am

Great work. We have to tell facts to people. The blind cannot see, and the ones whose brains are dead will never see facts, and will believe those they have taken as their masters. I was in US until Monday and had a situation where I met a Sherrif’s Deputy. After the official work he started chatting and asked me what I thought of the OBL killing. I told him that I cannot say anything because I do not believe in politicians. He agreed with me and said that all over the world politicians are liars. That, in my opinion, is the understanding of many people who are silent spectators.

OBL is dead, but ‘when’ is the question. By not showing his picture and dumping him in the sea raises more doubts than clarifying them.

    Two comments:
Dead body not shown- May be they want to run a sequel.
Pakistan Govt, Army and ISI were not caught on the wrong foot, they have been caught with their pants down, totally exposed. And this is most fearsome aspect of the whole drama. More worrying than the shame full surrender of a whole battalion before few thugs and mercenaries.

    Good write-up Ms Yasmin!

What an anachronistic piety pretended in the second decade of 21st century! The Greek Tragedy was so averse to violence that a murder was not shown on the stage but only reported through the courtesy of a messenger. The elimination of an Arab Prince in this drama is least stage-able; they have not placed his body on the stage but dispatched it to the mysterious Arabian Sea.

This is all too dramatic to be credible.

    Best regards,

Three Cheers to her lucid expression; concise and piercing. Her apt observations support my views right at the outset that it was an act straight from a badly conceived and ill directed, Bollywood action movie. Obama and party watching it live, as shown by the leading TV Channels globally, says it all. Conclusions are the high mark. Splendid! The other motive could be to create reason to “do more” within the geographical boundaries of this ill fated land of the pure. Today’s press carries that ambition. It is captioned; Obama reserves the right to act again in Pakistan: US. – BR. KK

america is geant in tech. and science .how a two passenger planes can attack on thier target and american can not do any thing.
arif if you belive on justification given by americans agencies for being failure to stop 9/11 then you have to belive pakistani agencies also. that they were unaware that bin ladin was hidding near military academy.simple
one thing more it is very hard to belive that american agencies were unaware that planes(9/11) enters in wrong routes and they dont know.
