Is Pakistan Being Framed?

Yasmeen Ali

The dynamics are shifting. The game plan to deal with Pakistan is shifting. There is a huge feeling of let down amongst the general populace with regards to the relationship of our status as a “close ally on war on terror” with the USA.

Since the Raymond Davis case, events have transpired to bring Pakistan , internationally, in a most unfavorable light. First, Osama was discovered in Abbotabad.  A US cable, released by WIKILEAKS revealed USA knew Osama was in Pakistan since 2008 (CLASSIFIED BY: MULTIPLE SOURCES REASON: E.O. 12958, AS AMENDED, SECTION 1.4(C) DECLASSIFY ON: 20330910 S E C R E T / / NOFORN / / 20330910).

Cheeeee!!!

And they did nothing?

Political pundits long predicted attacks like Karachi Naval Base, will happen to establish to the world, that Pakistan is a world of terrorists, thereby, by being unable to protect it’s naval base, is implicitly incapable of protecting it’s nukes! A case cleverly being projected by the western media by expressing “concern” over Pakistan’s ability to protect her sensitive points.  Even before the naval base attack, in it’s May 15th edition,Express.Co.UK carried an article by Marco Giannangeli. It announces the decision of US to deploy troops in Pakistan if the nation’s nuclear installations come under threat from terrorists seeking revenge for Osama Bin Laden’s death.

Entry into the Karachi Naval Base was way beyond the capability of Taliban. Only 4 to 6 invaders held the base captive, inside collaboration and security failure notwithstanding? C’mon! Gimme a break.

Wait. A memory kick here.

Was not India very interested in procuring the P-3C Orion Aircrafts eventually procured by Pakistan?   In a cable generating from US Embassy in New Delhi on 2005 May clearly defined the Indian Navy’s interest in the P-3C Orion aircraft( some excerpts are shown below):

“We continue to see serious potential for the sale of P-3C Orions, and the chance to compete for multi-role combat aircraft. During Admiral Prakash’s recent visit to the US he indicated a strong desire to move quickly on acquisition of P-3Cs, even requesting leasing two P-3’s as an interim solution. “

What a co-incidence! That was what got destroyed in the attack.

The NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has admitted the safety of Pakistan nukes is a matter of concern” during his one day visit to Afghanistan in May 2011.

Clinton arrives today in Pakistan for talks. A friend, in light of the on going scenario, wrote,” Slowly and surely they are coming to the point.  We have to wait for the onslaught after the visit of Ms. Hillary Clinton and Pakistan’s response”.

Question looming large on the horizon is: Is Pakistan Being Framed?

1970 thinking again.back off;ben laden in your backyard;why?who is responsible?any character left to take the blame for it individually?u lose the aircraft, any heads rolling; The P.M.,Minister of Defence,Jcoas, coas navy, anybody along the line ready to take responsibility? No shame;we exhibit the remains all over our tv networks as trophies.
Why should Pakistan suffer because of some imbeciles who are not doing their job correctly or are incapable of doing it.
I say 1970 because it was a few decision makers who divided Pakistan.had they listened to the saner element within and outside uniform Pakistan would not have suffered.People like General Yaqub, who was Governor and taken out. Most of the leaders of East Pakistan, maulana bhashani, tridevRoy,etc. Some of them paid with their lives for Pakistan.Even Shah of Iran tried to intervene without avail.the world govts tried but we were the khudkush with bloated egos and toyguns who thought the barrel could solve all problems.
Gandhiji.Mandella etc fought empires with the voice of morality ,courage and equity.no guns.
Question?where has all the character gone;auctioned off to the highest bidder in the market place with little properties and bank accounts in mouseholes all over the world?

    Please reread the lines Faisal:
“Entry into the Karachi Naval Base was way beyond the capability of Taliban. Only 4 to 6 invaders held the base captive, inside collaboration and security failure notwithstanding? C’mon! Gimme a break”.
All factors are INTERLINKED. Our poor performance, inside treachery, vested interests.
They are mutually inclusive & not exclusive of each other.
Life is not black & whites. It’s mostly gray.

      Dear Ms Yasmeen,
Entry into the Drigh Road Air base where MEHRAN is located is, I would say is easiest !
Those who raided the base were no ordinary Talibans…they were highly trained/practiced & used mortar launcher only to destroy the a/cs.and were focused totally on their targets ie P3s………….they did not take hostages and did not go delibrately killing people……..casualties were result of fire fight. It is obvious they had come for a “hit & Run” mission and did not take any hostages or fortify themselves ( to the best info available ) for fight to the death…………………
MEHRAN duty staff was certainly taken by surprise & could not deter a determined enemy and surely failed to foil the attack………….to put it bluntly..it was a surgical strike……
Whatever arm chair critics say it is beyond any of the best to deter a determind surgical
operation…damage is always the winner !!!
Treachery? …. yes, one cannot disagree but motivation of the enemy too……

        Siddiqi Sahib
I agree. Those who entered the base were no ordinary Taliban. They were Superman rolled into Bond, rolled into Spider Man ,all in one! HAVE TO BE.
BTW are you aware of how many images(detailed) of Mehran base are available on net? Google has updated satellite imagery of entire base, assets, compounds, buildings, its surroundings, fields and Chakora Nala around the base walls..
I cannot help laughing(I cannot stop) of all the analyses going on about how they entered, how they “breached security”. All our SUPERMEN carried to the power of 2 had to do was to google! HOWZAT?

People who like the Americans are in a hurry favor aggressive strategies like ‘search and destroy’. This is the type of strategy that does not suit us, and cost us 10 precious lives at Mehran.

An alternate, less costly and more effective strategy for us would be ‘siege, deprive of sleep and water, starve, gas and wait’. This strategy would not have cost lives nor allowed ‘escape’. provided immense positive publicity,

I still maintain that the GOP and the Armed forces knew full well what the US was up to. They chose to be ignorant imbeciles, rather than be seen as complicit in the US’s abominable act ( killing without trial!).

Is the ally going to REPLACE the lost Naval aircraft any time soon IF at all? PK must demand it!…. at least as a reward for keeping its eyes closed before the OBL episode.

Sometime ago, a US missile aimed at afghanistran to get OBL crashed in Pakistan. The US embassy staff were at the site before the Pak authorities could make a move just like the time when the Pak ambassador to Lebanon was at the hotel in Beirut where Mr. H.S. Suhrawardy died before anyone knew of his death). Needless to say the missile was taken away intact! So was the attack helicopter.

Good presentation, and it could not be far from the real thing. So we as a nation must be on our
toes, to shore up our defenses. In the light of above argument, be better review our all
    arrangement/ agreements with United States.
Ms. Hillary is a tough negotiator, to face her we have wimp of a lady whose credentials
    are yet to be tested.

Yasmeen, all very well but everything you said will be much clearer and, I’d say, more helpful to all your devote readers if you didn’t make Pakistan the centre of planet Earth. I’d suggest you talk about USA’s imperialistic ambitious, to dominate and control the world) – as so obviously seen this week in London during the various meetings between Parack Obama and David Cameron -.

Talk about the nearly 750 USA military bases around the world, their intervention With soldiers and weapons or weapons only, in armed conflicts the world over.

Talk about CIA and “many” other secret agencies, working towards preparing the ground for this “mess” in which we live. Explain how USA, whilst they have now said for 63 years (!!!!!) over 6 decades, that they’ll help Israel, all they managed to do is create war after war and extraordinary tension – and violence – in the whole of the Middle East.

The Earth is ONE and very small by imperialistic standards, this is why USA is also so keen to conquer other parts of the Universe.

International stake holders have proved that, “Pakistan and Bangladesh were conspiracy against development and growth of INDIA”. Citizens of this region were made fool to join False Movements of Hindu Muslim Riots in 1900 to Date. Few terrorists (sectarian or Ethnic) were funded by USA and UK to stabilize the economy of USA and EU. NATO and WARSAW were two rivals. Once WARSAW does not exist USA and EU are funding NATO from hard earned TAX deposits of migrants settled in USA and UK. the GREAT GAME has now started B care FOOOOOLs

    Dear Ms Yasmeen,
One cannot disagree with your observations and comments
Attackers were no ordinary operatives; it could well be a well planned strike against the aircrafts…a la Bombay Taj Mahal ??
In fact citing of MEHRAN has been questionable from day one from operational point of view and what happened had to happen one day….not by terrorist but by enemy air strike..it has always been most vulnerable…………….BUT NOBODY cared for the last 30 years or so and NOW we are into needless blame game ??
I am really saddened by the attitude of Media; this is the time to close ranks rather score points and jockey for ratings…….what has happened CANNOT be UNDONE; mistakes have been committed; lives have been lost and we all feel embarrassed. It does no merit endless mindless abuse and criticism
What has happened merits deep thinking; it is not a simple terrorist activity; it is not just an isolated incident….exposure and arrest of Davis; his dubious release and the extreme concern & pressure of the HIGHEST US administration for his release at the highest levels; Abbotabad drama; attacks on navy buses was a dress rehearsal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So please do not indulge in blame game and point scoring and do not use this incident for Ratings ………
I am sure and confident the navy will itself take stock of its fault lines and initiate corrective steps; mistakes are made, lessons are learnt; if mistakes were not made then no general or cricket team ever lose the battle/game !! battles seldom end in a draw… loss/defeat is the best teacher; one learns and rectifies shortcomings. Navy too will learn and I am sure navy has a built in corrective mechanism so let us have faith.
This is no time for point scoring but to close ranks. Media should behave with restarint and sobriety.

  • siddiqui my  On May 28, 2011 at 12:37 pm

    Dear Ms Yasmeen.
I think we had enough of bashing; it is a national tragedy and perhaps this will be a wake up call for the nation; if loss of two P3s can bring a spirit of resolve to the Nation, then the loss and price is more than worth this whole mishap. Much much more is at stake!
Just go back to 1946-47 and see what spirit was generated in the ENTIRE Muslim Ummah after the creation of Pakistan…from Indonesia to Egypt and North Africa a cosmic wave of yearning for FREEDOM was born and see how many muslim countries achieved their Freedom post creation of Pakistan; we were a beacon of hope and bright future; we were the lead nation and the Future of the Ummah………………and then?????????????????
Let us not lament, weep and curse and blame the Talibans and their elk for all our ills; they are at least carrying the flag of Islam even if it is up side down; and we the rest ? educated in elite western universities and looking down everything Pakistani and Islamic are the lost children of NOWhere!!!!!!!
Our young sons lie buried in the depths of the Indian Ocean; green fields of Punjab and under the hot sun of Thar sand………..for what reason and for whom???????????
A dozen or so young men who died in the grounds of MEHRAN died for whom??????????????? their death should and must spur us to rectify our short comings and bolster our resolve to create a better and peaceful Pakistan…as it is said “they died so we may live..”
Will we tarnish their death to show us off and to enhance some one’s ratings ??

  • Nadeem  On May 29, 2011 at 3:25 am

    YAA,
You certainly make a brief but fairly compelling case. There is an unease about the whole story, i.e., Raymond Davis, OBL, Mehran and the hyperbole in the western press/comments.
