Editor’s Note: Dr Mirza’s resignation as Vice President PPP Sindh,an MPA & Ministerial post may not have rocked the nation but for the reasons disclosed. Pakistani politics witnessed a new first. Holding the Holy Quran in his hand and then placing it upon his head, Sindh’s senior minister Zulfiqar Ali Mirza made some very bold revelations against his friend’s key, even if troubled, political ally as well as his friend’s closest and most handy aide.

President Asif Ali Zardari perhaps now faces the biggest challenge of his political career as none other than his most loyal friend and senior minister Sindh, Zulfiqar Ali Mirza, at a press conference issued a loaded charge sheet. Mirza gave specific information along with alleged evidence, against all those he accused. He said the ongoing operation was meaningless and that the real killers were not being apprehended.

Zulfiqar Mirza’s attack has produced a complex political dynamic. One with the ‘evidence’ that Zulfiqar Mirza claims he has against the MQM’s alleged involvement in target killings, he has put the MQM under pressure. An MQM on the defensive provides political leverage to the PPP in its ongoing negotiations with that party. It may also help to stem the growing alienation of the Sindhis against the PPP leadership, especially earlier the mishandling of the revival of the local bodies.

The claims made by Zulfiqar Mirza can also potentially strengthen the PPP’s hand in the Supreme Court’s suo motto hearing on the Karachi target killing. The SC bench now meeting in Karachi is bound to call Zulfiqar Mirza to make good his claims in court.

(Read: Suo motu action on Karachi – CJ seeks report from chief secretary, IGP Sindh)

But the most challenging for PPP’s internal politics is Mirza’s attack on Rehman Malik. Zulfiqar Mirza has made specific charges against the interior minister, holding him responsible for leading a “farcical operation” and for being primarily committed to keeping the MQM on board. In addition to his criticism at the press conference, Zulfiqar Mirza, later in a television program insisted that the interior minister  “is Pakistan’s enemy and if Pakistan breaks up, then Rehman Malik will be responsible for it.”

Although Mirza insisted that he would remain loyal to the president till his dying day and would give his life in the party’s service, within the immediate context he has created major political challenges for the president. He has alleged that the president’s right-hand man is hand in glove with the killers of innocent citizens.

As for whether these extraordinary revelations will lead to any action against Rehman Malik or the MQM, the punch-line comes from Zulfiqar Mirza himself. While speaking on television he said, “I have rolled the ball, now the ball in the court of the president, army chief, the ISI chief, the PM, the speaker of parliament and the chairman of the senate.” Mirza expects them to use the evidence that he has presented to take action against the MQM and the interior minister.  He said the moment the CJP asks him to present himself in court, he will do so.

Zulfiqar Mirza may have become a thorn in the president’s side. But Mirza is one PPP leader that the president will not find it easy to sideline. He will also not able to easily brush aside the alleged charge sheet presented against Rehman Malik nor the MQM. Clearly these moves by Zardari’s closest friend puts the Karachi operation in an even greater spotlight and for all the wrong reasons. It also sharply exposes the weaknesses in Zardari’s politics of “mufahimmat.”

The questions that Mirza’s charge sheet raises only confirms public criticism of the operation. Questions that have no easy answers but ones that will now be repeatedly asked by many political and non-political stake-holders from across the country.

    Dear Nasim

    Greetings from Boston.

You continue to be my fav analyst and columnist.

ZM’s move is not just a simple rattling of the chain but a political earthquake of sorts. With Sarkari’s close buddy blowing the whistle in public with a Quran on his head, the sxxt has hit the fan. There may even be attempts to silence him before he actually starts spilling the real baked beans.

I think his biggest allegation is not on Altaf’s mafia not even Raymond Malik’s lies, both of which are no national secrets. It is on the US having decided to break Pakistan, with Altaf being part of the master plan. Not sure whether you deliberately left it out or was it an oversight. However, I am confident that something good will come out of this madness.

Let me know if you are coming this way.

Even if Mrza is not lying, what he wants us to believe?
    Altaf has contacts with CIA?
Just like the ones that he had before in 1990’s, when his older brother had told me in USA, “MQMis not contesting in any Assembly Elections because USA has told us, not to do that” … ?
When I had sent someone to ask CIA Chief of Pakistan Cell about it. The Chief had started laughing. This was the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard.

What happened was, ISI had planted an Agent in MQM in those days and he had told Altaf that USA does not want MQM to participate in Elections. Probably Altaf has been again trapped by another ISI Mole if Mirza is not lying because I called CIA after hearing this allegation of Mirza and people there were laughing again. They said, whoever told this to Altaf was not from CIA because USA can not have any such plan as long as Obama is President and C-in-C of US Army.

I guess, this is what ISI wants to propagate through Mirza or had wanted to propagate through Altaf if Mirza is not lying. Looks like Pak Army is at war with USA but it has not declared that so far.

  • ID  On August 29, 2011 at 5:07 am

Here is a classic case of pure conviction, and principle being stronger than power or pelf, versus the convoluted pragmatic politics. I think Mirza made the case very boldly and very well and none too soon. Now ‘Doodh ka doodh aur paani k paani’ should be evident and this should not be allowed to be adulterated by the nation or we shall suffer irreparably.

Could you tell me, if Altaf is for end of Pakistan, why has he been issuing Pro Pak Army Statements?
ISI has been trying to trap him so, first Shahbaz Sarif issued a statement in favor of Karachi separated from Sindh as a separate Province. Altaf refused to fall in that trap.
Then, now this despite that he has been Pro Army in his statements. All it means is, doesn’t matter, what he does, Punjabi Army would always be Anti Mohajir.

Zulfiqar Mirza thought of it, designed it on Photoshop and sent it for publishing on social media … is all what I can say. It was published on 1st July 2011, not 6 months back. You may contact 10 Downing Street about their records and the dates when they received (if they did) such a letter.

Journalists are expected to be investigative and can contact their own sources to verify the authenticity of any published item.

    Thanks.

    • Syed  On August 30, 2011 at 4:47 am

What you write seems to be so true. Who is he trying to fool. Photoshop yes and that too a bad job. I immediately spotted it. This is all figment of imagination and all rubbish. Surprisingly Nasim Zehra fell for this garbage. How could she? Is she also a Urdu hater? How could she take the most untrustworthy source and quote it? This is getting too dirty. Zulfiqar Mirza is an arrogant, an ignorant and an irresponsible man. How did he accumulate so much of wealth when his father was an ordinary government servant? He pays three crores to police he says for doing his dirty work. Can I ask if that is tax paid money or tax stolen money – black money. He blocks Urdus from getting into the police service branding them all as bad. Why is he not punished? Why does not the Chief Justice take suo moto action for depriving citizens of a fair chance. His prejudice has no bounds.

  • Agha Gul  On August 29, 2011 at 5:18 am

The analysis, that springs up in my mind, is based on several well known facts; but two stand out. Mirza and Zardari very close, all the other facts more or less already known. So? It appears Zardari wants the action action against MQM now to eliminate it as a political challenge as well as get rid of Rehman. Mirza has played Zardari’s game. High stake, but may work. Mirza didt criticize Zardari, and protected even reputation of BB ferociously.

    • A.H Nayyer  On August 29, 2011 at 8:51 am

An optimistic view: the Govt wants to take action against MQM and its criminal elements, but going there first would have defeated the whole exercise of cleaning up Karachi. MQM would have come out in full force and made the govt retreat. The govt therefore needed to first create an impression that this is an across the board action, and was first taken against PPP supporters and their stronghold in Lyari, overly dramatized by Mirza. Now when a similar action is taken in MQM stronghold areas, MQM will not be able to offer resistance.

In these grim times, there is no harm in being a little optimistic, is there?

    ‘Bumb Phata’
Not one but many of them.
ZM has charge sheeted MQM and RM. He may not have come out with any new or unexpected allegation but the new element was the presence of The Holy Book and (supposedly) documentary evidence. This appears to be a well-thought-out attempt to split MQM (between good urdu speaking and the bad ones). How effective is it going to be? Only time will tell but the knee jerk reaction by MQM leadership shows it is telling on them. They will definitely come out with equally reasoned defence after regaining composure.
I am happy he has come out so strong and so blunt against Rehman Malik. I have no doubt in my mind that he is a US asset who was planted in BB’s camp. After ensuring her departure he was assigned Interior to facilitate free movement of US operatives and issue of licenses to US security contractors. We have never been able to track down any of the terrorist acts like suicide bombings, attack on Police training centre Manawan, FIA building, Emergency15 just to name a few, situation in Karachi became bad to worse. All this under his able supervision. He is being rewarded with Hilal e Imtiaz not for his services to this country but for the services he has rendered for his masters. Probably in order of precedence of the Americans he is above AAZ. Shrewed as AAZ is he may have encouraged a loyal friend to mount this scathing attack to initially put RM on the defencive and subsequently shuffle him after convincing the Americans that now he was losing his usefulness.
Third element of ZM press conference was his strong support for Army and the ISI. He went to the extent of saying that at this moment the country is saved due to these two organisations.
Effects of his bombshells will start appearing in coming days. All will depend on the admissibility of the evidence he is holding.

      Thank you CNU,
What i want to say very loadly, is a demand that the Hilal e Imtiaz must be taken back from RM.
The allegations of ZM are so strong, that a case must be registered against RM, forthwith. There is no doubt
that RM is an American Mole, and have been doing every thing what his Masters and Handlers were expecting
      from him to do.
He came close to BB, when he escaped from Pakistan from allegation of corruption, which were to some
a very strong case, when he absconded from duty, and took the files which were concerend BB / AAZ
corruption cases, established in NS time. He has getting the payback for BB and AAZ, ZM can
not mention this, he will implicate both in corruption case and would look bad for his benefactors.

So let us all patriotic Pakistanis demand that the
Hilal e Imtiaz, must be taken back and an enquiry
be instituted on charges of high treason.
Let this case be an example for all those traitors and
      would be traitors.

      TMH.

Absolutely so, something has to give. This is the most serious and earnest charge sheet. This is timely with the superior courts also looking t the issue. It is a done thing for the MQM jinn to be put back in the Pakistani bottle with the ethnic bottle to be sunk in the mines forever.

  • Anonymous  On August 29, 2011 at 9:27 am

Like a well rehearsed Parrot, planned appearnace and patronage from
Aiwan e saddar , ZM has been let loose as a cannon. May be AAZ was
tired of negotiating and meeting the demnads of MQM and finally gave a
green signal to his trusted lackey to ‘Fire off the salvo”.

Let us see the symptoms. ZM met the President in ISB and said nothing
for two days. The plan was probably hatched then and the timing
    executed at a predetrmined time.

Strangely enough not a peep or any action by his spouse. She is into
    the plan as well.

ZM had sent all documentary evidence to PM and AAZ . Yet they took no
action. Why? They have deliberately risked undermining PPP position in
order to dump MQM ; what with elections approaching. These disclosures
show the incompetence of the government but greater gain is that it
labels MQM as a Terror organistaion.

Afetr ZM went ballistic no admonition came from PM or AAZ. Are they
the type to keep quite on such an outbusrt. Only Dr. Awan said that
    ithey were ZM’s personal views.

Very serious allegations were made against RM as a person and as a
minister. If I called my sweeper such bad names even he would leave
his job. To get insulted at national level in front of the entire
media and then claim ZM as ‘my brother’ and under emotinal stress is
astonishing to say the least. Obviously RM knew what was coming and
the whole drama like a third rate B movies has unfolded as
manuscripted .If ever there was a classic Noora Kushti this is it.

This could be a precursor for PPP to call in the army OR embarrass MQM
with exposure and yet claim innocence of not betraying them , but a
    deranged ZM.

I could go on and on but this is dirty politics and its over powering
strench is already making me feel faint.

Please try to understand. Army had to divert attention from Baluchistan and make the country look like its being destabilized so, it can convince Obama to let it end Democracy in Pakistan.

  • Sohail  On August 29, 2011 at 9:34 am

In my opinion, there is no way Zulfiqar Mirza could have taken this step without AZ’s consent. There are great contradictions in his statements, on the one hand he accuses the Government (PPP) of incompetency, bad judgement in relation to ‘mufahimat’ and in relation to Rahman Malik, thereby holding the Government and the President responsible for the state of affairs and, on the other hand, he swears by his friendship and commitment to AZ and his loyalty to PPP. There is certainly ‘more than meets the eye’.
One thing is obvious, Zulfiqar’s action has added to the turmoil and tension in Karachi specifically, and Pakistan in general.
I have no love lost for MQM or PPP, for that matter, any political party – the way our “democracy” was introduced by ZAB, the foundation was tilted and hence it has grown to become what it is. There is no real democracy, a very small percentage of people actually practice their right of voting, the majority of the votes that count and create Governments are from vested interests, be it feudal (rural & urban) or commercial (legal & illegal), and the poor to whom, unfortunately, it doesn’t matter, and hence are available to the highest bidder.
May Allah grant us a miracle and save our beloved homeland.
If Zulfiqar Mirza was put under test for integrity, he would fail miserably in the elementary stage. Imagine his claim of giving Rs. 3 crores as gifts to the police from his personal funds!!! This is nonsense, utter nonsense and the public is so gullible that these things pass unnoticed.

    Hi all,
    Qaed e Azam and Gandhi…
I am reminded of an event of Qaed e Azam and Gandhi. Gandhi had once said that he wanted to meet The Qaed in secret and would go to any place to meet him with folded arms and bended knees. To which The Qaed replied we are talking of the destiny of two nations and there can be no secret about this and if you are a straight man come with straight limbs.

If Zulfiqar Mirza believed in himself and if he knew he was a truthful person himself there was no need for him to lift Quran e Shareef on his head. Only liars do it. It is almost impossible to believe his words particularly after his sectarian and racist remarks all through. In any other country he would be behind bars for “Disaffection”, “Slander”, “Defamation”, and a Threat to Public Order and Peace.

He played his Sindh card and as if that was not bad enough also played the Shia card. Went to the extent of calling himself “badboodar shia”. What the hell is he doing? Is he doing Thaqiyya? (it is ok to lie!)

If I was in power I would have put him in jail long ago for saying “Pakistan Naa Khappay” as if he created Pakistan and had the authority to undo it. He is an extremely imbalanced and a temperamental man. Beats me such a person enjoyed so much of power. No wonder he was singularly responsible for the deaths of so many. Widowed so many women and orphened so many children.

On top of it he says he did not recruit a single person Urdu speaking from Karachi out of 10,000 appointments. Prejudice has no limits. Can this person be called fair? You deprive such a large population of employment and food. Make them jobless. Shame on him and the likes of him.

No wonder you don’t find any Urdu speaking in the Home Department in any position. From top to bottom they are all Sindies whether they are fit for it or not. Is this justice? Is this good governance? Shouldn’t he be tried and taken to task for this and sent to jail for being so unfair with the citizens he is supposed to serve?

First Altaf Hussain could never in his wildest imagination tell Zulfiqar Mirza that he won’t stop the Qatl e Aam of Pathans (genocide of Pathans) as if he was doing the Qatl e Aam of Pathans. Who would ever say this even if that was the intent. This is total rubbish and garbage Only a fool and an idiot would buy his statement. Urdus are getting killed in Karachi by Pathans and Aman Committee goons of Zulfiqar Mirza, left right and center and day in and day out and this guy enjoys speaking this utter nonsense which will only draw ireof the Pathans.

He seems to have deliberately said this by design to incite Pathans and start another orgy of bloodshed. Nothing else. He must immediately be arrested, tried and hanged for creating bad blood between two people otherwise living together peacefully. It was totally peaceful until the recent inciting by ANP and its incendiary statements. He seems to be more stupid than he looks.

I hope PPP and Pakistan does not let him go unpunished. He must carry the maximum penalty.

PLEASE don’t get emotional ob what ZM has said. RM is definitely what ZM says he is BUT what is the credibility of ZM. Isn’t he the same guy who had said that he was working to break Pakistan when BB died. Remember both RM and ZM are faithfuls of the master, AAZ. Right now no PPPia dares to say or do anything unless approved or ordered by the master. If ZM is convinced that RM is a traitor, I am sure he also knows that RM is right hand man of AAZ. How come he condemns the slave but vows to stay loyal to the master. His bombshell is too bold to be anything but a drama staged by the great master tactician, the AAZ. We the Karaciates in perticular and Pakistanis in general should brace for more bloodshed. Right now the Govt has absolutely no opposition. The Mians have their tails between the legs and are happy to be Maharajs of the Punjab, Pakistan be damned.

  • Saeed  On August 30, 2011 at 9:22 am

Zulfiqar Mirza, whether in his cups or out of them, knows one thing, if he knows anything at all i.e that if he says something of great moment or importance without his master’s clearance, the latter’s malice will fall on him like a ton of bricks. Knowing the record of his master, you can be certain that nothing this rat says or does is without endorsement from the top. What the game is, can be anybody’s guess. But that it is a game, no one should doubt.

  • zindadilpakistan  On September 6, 2011 at 9:46 am

The latest salvo fired by Dr Zulifiqar Mirza against the Interior Minister and MQM have got the media and the politicians in a dither. Whatever salvos he has fired have to be taken with a pinch of salt. We know the state, the country is in, and the merciless killings and extortions have left everyone worried about Karachi; whereas it’s all very well to blame other politicians for the mess, but what about their own roles? He has served as the home minister in Sindh and things weren’t very well in Karachi. The good doctor has also served as the senior minister of the province. If he has suspicions against any political party why did he refrain from disclosing them? If the interior minister was interfering in his domain why did he not speak up then?

  • SB  On September 10, 2011 at 7:36 pm

I am ashamed he is not yet arrested and allowed to divide people will lead to division of the country. The psychic case should be flogged in public for creating hatred, distances and dividing people. One does not understand this.
